WNY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 8.20.13

European corn borer (ECB) trap catches are low at all locations except Owego. Corn earworm (CEW) were caught at 9 locations this week with five sites high enough to require a spray interval of 5 or 6 days. Only two sites reported fall armyworm (FAW) but one of those sites had a catch of 14. Western bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at only 12 sites this week. The high count was at Williamson with 21 moths, but numbers continue to decrease at most locations. Fields that are in the whorl or early tassel stage should be scouted for WBC egg masses with a 4% threshold for processing sweet corn and a 1% threshold for fresh market sweet corn. It takes between 5-7 days WBC eggs to hatch. It is critical that sprays are timed before the larvae have a chance to enter the ear. The egg mass will become purple in color approximately 24 hours before egg hatch. Corn in the tassel emergence stage should be scouted for ECB and FAW damage and larvae.
