WNY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 6.4.13

Only 14 of 25 sites reported this week. ECB numbers picked up, with 5 of the 14 sites reporting ECB-E and 3 sites reporting ECB-Z. Last week nearly 50% of the corn started under row cover was approaching tassle. This week that same field was at nearly 90% tassle.  However a quick survey of about 25 plants showed no egg masses. For management suggestions for ECB in early corn please click on the link to the right “Managing ECB in plastic, row cover, or transplanted sweet corn”.

CEW was also caught at two new sites this week, Farmington and Kirkville. If you haven’t done so already check out the map posted on the About page to get an overview of where traps are located. The map will enlarge if you click on it.

An additional note of interest  is that the first fireflies were seen this past weekend. Keith Waldron reports that fireflies are a good bioindicator that enough growing degrees have accumulated for corn rootworm eggs to hatch. But if they hatch in a field not planted to corn, they have nothing to eat and they die.  That’s why rotation is a perfect control for this pest.
