NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.27.22
This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).
Only ten sites reporting this week. No European corn borer (ECB)- E were caught at any of the reporting sites this week and ECB-Z was caught at only one site. The hybrid ECB was aslo not caught at any of the reporting sites. Corn earworm (CEW) was caught at nine sites, with seven high enough to be on a 3, 4, 5 or 6 day spray schedule (see table below). Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at six sites this week and only one site caught Western bean cutworm (WBC).
Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2022 and 2021 for comparison. ECB-E and ECB-Z trap catch numbers were low all year and very similar to 2021. CEW numbers were higher than usual early in the season. Numbers gradually increased and peaked with an average of 50 moths around September 6th. In 2021 the peak was lower and more prolonged, stretching over 5 weeks. Unlike 2021, we had fairly low FAW pressure at most of the sites with a few exceptions. FAW started early but remained low and constant from mid August through the end of the trapping season. The flights for WBC are nearly identical this year as compared to last with peak flight occurring the first week in August in both years. In 2022 average WBC catch was slightly lower than in 2021.
The SCPTN started in 1993 and monitored for ECB-E and ECB-Z. In 1997 CEW and FAW were added and in 2010 WBC was added to the trapping effort. Below are graphs showing the populations trends in NY over those years. Keep in mind that trapping locations do change from year to year as new cooperators start while others are unable to continue. The graphs represent general trends for the state.
