NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.22.20
Seventeen sites reported this week. No European corn borer (ECB)-E or ECB-Z were caught at any reporting sites this week. Fifteen sites reported corn earworm (CEW) with fourteen high enough to be on a 4, 5 or 6 day spray interval (see table at bottom of post). Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at thirteen sites and Western bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at two sites. The hybrid ECB moth was not caught at any of the five reporting sites.
Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2020 and 2019 for comparison. ECB-E and ECB-Z trap catch numbers were similar this year as compared to 2019. In 2018 we had the third highest CEW flight since monitoring began, in 2019 the CEW flight was back to its average, but this year (2020) the flight was very high again. The peak flight for CEW averaged 82 moths in 2020, compared to 19 in 2019 and 65 in 2018. FAW was about the same this year as compared to last year, but in 2019 we saw a second peak in the second half of September that we did not experience this year. Peak WBC flight occurred during the first week of August, which is what is expected, with an average high of 42 moths during peak flight. In 2019 it was delayed by about a week with an average high of only 25 moths.

The SCPTN started in 1993 and monitored for ECB-E and ECB-Z. In 1997 CEW and FAW were added and in 2010 WBC was added to the trapping effort. Below are graphs showing the populations trends in NY over those years. Keep in mind that trapping locations do change from year to year as new cooperators start while others are unable to continue. The graphs represent general trends for the state.
