NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.21.21

This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).

Twenty sites reporting this week. No European corn borer (ECB)- E was caught at any of the reporting sites this week and ECB-Z was caught at only two sites. The hybrid ECB was caught at one of the four reporting sites: Hurley (25). Corn earworm (CEW) was caught at all 20 sites, all high enough to be on a 3, 4, 5 or 6 day spray schedule (see table below). Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at 16 sites this week and a 5 sites still caught Western bean cutworm (WBC).

Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2021 and 2020 for comparison. ECB-E and ECB-Z trap catch numbers were lower this year as compared to 2020, with a slight peak this year the third week of July and another one the third week of August. In 2020 there were also two peaks but the first occurred in late May and the second in late July and both peaks in 2020 were nearly twice as high as those in 2021. CEW numbers seemed very high this year, but not as high ass those form 2020. However there was a distinct peak in 2020 with an average of 80 moths the first week of September. This year’s peak wasn’t as great but it was prolonged and stretched over 5 weeks. FAW numbers were definitely higher this year and peaked nearly a month earlier than in 2020. The flights for WBC a re nearly identical this year as compared to last. The graph lines for WBC for 2020 and 2021 are almost identical.

The SCPTN started in 1993 and monitored for ECB-E and ECB-Z. In 1997 CEW and FAW were added and in 2010 WBC was added to the trapping effort. Below are graphs showing the populations trends in NY over those years. Keep in mind that trapping locations do change from year to year as new cooperators start while others are unable to continue. The graphs represent general trends for the state.
