NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 8.20.24

Thirty sites reporting this week. European corn borer (ECB)-E  was trapped at four sites and ECB-Z was trapped at seven sites. Corn earworm (CEW) was trapped at 26 sites, with 25 sites high enough to be on a 3, 4, 5 or 6 day spray schedule (see chart below). Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at seven sites and Western bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at 13 of the reporting sites.

CEW really increased over the last week, with an average of 32 moths caught per site (see graph below). Where CEW are being caught in high enough numbers to drive the spray schedule, the other worm pests should also be controlled. CEW eggs are generally hard to detect, but in years with higher pressure, they can sometimes be found on the silks (see images below).
