WNY Sweet Corn Pheromone Trap Network Report 5.29.12

Eight locations reported trap catches this week.  At two, Penn Yan and Farmington, European corn borer numbers increased substantially from last week.  This is only of interest to growers with corn that is very advanced, in the late whorl to early tassel stage, during the flight.    When eggs are laid on late whorl-tassel emergence corn, larvae do not appear in the tassel as it emerges, and so tassel emergence scouting will not detect an infestation.  With cooler temperatures approaching, the ECB flight may be prolonged, so it’s difficult to predict when peak flights will occur.  Corn earworm are being caught in low numbers at most locations.  This is very early and similar to what we saw in 2011.  One fall armyworm moth was caught at the Waterport site.
