WNY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 6.14.11

European corn borer (ECB) are being caught at nearly all locations and catches remain high at several locations this week.  Egg masses and young larvae continue to be found.  Corn earworm (CEW) moths are being caught at about half the locations reporting catches, and are very high at a couple.  Fall armyworm are being caught at fewer locations and mostly in low numbers.

ECB larvae in corn at or near tassel emergence this week will probably not have larvae emerging in the tassels like later planted corn, so scouting is not reliable, and fields should be treated in areas with high catches of either ECB or CEW to prevent newly hatched larvae from getting into the ear.  There may be damage on the foliage to indicate an infestation.   See the ECB fact sheet for photos of feeding damage and this link for photos of CEW feeding on whorl stage corn.  Once fields are in the silk stage use the chart below to time applications where CEW are being caught.
