NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.24.19

Only fourteen sites reporting this week. European corn borer (ECB)-E and ECB-Z were caught at one site each. Nine sites reported corn earworm (CEW), with eight high enough to be on a 3, 4, 5, or 6 day spray schedule (see table at bottom of post).  Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at eleven sites and Western bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at only two sites this week.

Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2019 and 2018 for comparison. ECB-E and ECB-Z trap catch numbers were similar to last year. In 2018 we had the third highest CEW flight since monitoring began. However, in 2019 the CEW flight was back to its average. FAW was slightly higher this year as compared to 2018. WBC flight was delayed by about a week this year and numbers were also a bit lower with an average high of 25 this year as compared to 33 in 2019.

Average sweet corn trap catches from 5.28.19 – 9.17249.

Average sweet corn trap catches from 5.29.18 – 9.25.18.

Average sweet corn trap catches for all reporting sites from 5.29.18 – 9.25.18.

The SCPTN started in 1993 and monitored for ECB-E and ECB-Z. In 1997 CEW and FAW were added and in 2010 WBC was added to the trapping effort. Below are graphs showing the populations trends in NY over those years. Keep in mind that trapping locations do change from year to year as new cooperators start while others are unable to continue. The graphs represent general trends for the state.

This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).
