NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.25.18

Just nine sites reporting this week. European corn borer (ECB)-E was caught at 1 sites and ECB-Z was caught at 3 sites. Corn earworm was caught at 7 sites with 6 high enough to be on a 3, 4, 5, or 6 day spray schedule (see table below). Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at 6 sites and no Western bean cutworm (WBC) were caught.

Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2018 and 2017 for comparison. ECB-E, ECB- Z and WBC flight were very similar this year as compared to 2017. CEW and FAW, however, had much greater flights this year. CEW were higher this year as compared to 2017. The highest catch of CEW (341) occurred on 9/4/18 in King Ferry. This was the highest catch for a site in one week since we began monitoring in 1994 (24 years ago).  I have received several reports of damage by CEW both in Bt corn as well as corn sprayed at 3 day intervals. CEW eggs are usually very difficult to scout for, but this year, with such high pressure, I could easily find eggs on nearly every plant I looked at (see photos below). FAW was also higher this year, but I have not received as many reports of damage caused by FAW.

Average sweet corn trap catches for all reporting sites from 5.29.18 – 9.25.18.

Average sweet corn trap catches for all reporting sites from 5.23.17 – 9.26.17

This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).
