NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.27.16

Only five sites reported this week for Western NY. European corn borer (ECB)-E and Z and Western bean cutworm (WBC) were not caught at any of the reporting sites this week. Corn earworm (CEW) was caught at four sites, all high enough to require a 4, 5, or 6 day spray schedule (see table at bottom of post).  Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at three sites this week. Please see the bottom of this post for a table of Eastern NY trap locations.

Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2016 and 2015 for comparison. Both ECB-E and Z were low this year. In 2015 we saw a peak in ECB-E flight the first week of August primarily due to one site (Seneca Castle), this peak was not seen this year. Both CEW and FAW numbers were greater this year as compared to 2015. WBC average moths per week did not change much form last year to this year, but the flight in 2015 lasted longer (nearly four weeks).

This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).

Are You Experiencing Drought Issues on Your Farm?
Please Help Us Collect Regional Information so We Can Help You Be Better Prepared in the Future

As you know, this summer we have experienced a period of lower than average rainfall combined with higher than average temperatures that has led to a drought of moderate to unprecedented severity in New York and much of the Northeast
