NY Sweet Corn Trap Network Report 9.26.17

Eight sites reporting this week. No European corn borer (ECB)-E or -Z moth were caught at any of the reporting sites this week. Corn earworm (CEW) was trapped at three sites, with two sites high enough to be on a 6 day spray schedule (see chart below). However, sprays are not required for fields that are within a week of harvest. Fall armyworm (FAW) was caught at five sites and Western Bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at two sites.

Below are graphs of the moth flights for 2017 and 2016 for comparison. This year I combined data from both Eastern NY (15 sites) and Western NY (21 sites). In previous years I only had data from Western NY, therefore the graphs from 2016 are only from the Western sites. Both ECB-E and Z were higher this year as compared to 2016. The increase in ECB-Z this year is primarily due to a few sites in Eastern NY (Greenwich, Florida and Feura Bush). CEW numbers were down this year. They peaked at an average of about 3 moths in late August 2017 as compared to an average of about 22 moths in early September in 2016. WBC flight began later this year but peaked much higher as compared to 2016. And FAW numbers were much lower this year as compared to 2016.

This will be the last post of the season. I would like to thank all of the cooperators for helping to collect data this year. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions for improvements (mez4@cornell.edu).
