WNY sweet corn trap network report 5.26.15

This is the first report of the 2015 season. Only four sites reporting this week and only ECB-E was caught at 2 of the sites, Seneca Castle and Farmington. The first spring flight of ECB-E moths is expected when accumulated growing degree days reach 374 (base 50). The accumulated degree days for the 24 trap network sites range from 237 to 391 with an average of 323.7. We are within the range for ECB flight to have started at several sites and will begin at other sites within the next week depending on temperature and location.

While checking traps today, I saw a minor amount of damage on some very young corn. The damage looks similar to whorl feeding by ECB but it is too early for that. Most likely this damage is due to billbug or black cutworm.

Shot-hole damage.
