European corn borer (ECB) trap catches are in the single digits at all locations except Farmington where 20 ECB-E moths were caught. Corn earworm (CEW) numbers are variable and were caught at 7 locations this week. Some locations have counts justifying either a 5 or 6 day spray schedule (see chart below). Only two sites reported fall armyworm (FAW) but one of those sites had a trap catch of 12 for the week.
Western bean cutworm (WBC) was caught at 18 of the 20 sites reporting, with a high count of 79. It appears that WBC numbers are still increasing (see graph below). Still no WBC eggs seen in the two fields I scouted. I also received reports from three other people all finding high WBC moths but no eggs observed in the field. The degree day accumulation (May 1st, base 50°F) for sweet corn trap network sites ranges from 1303-1707 with an average of 1510. Most areas are just above 50% WBC moth emergence based on accumulated degree days (for local population).
Below is a graphical representation of moth emergence for the season. All reporting sites have been combined to show the general trend for the 5 moth species for western NY from May 21 to August 6 (please see the map for site locations). Numbers for ECB-Z have been low for most of the season. ECB-E had a small peak early on and a second peak the third week of July. WBC are still peaking with a combined trap catch for all reporting sites of 276 for this week.
