This week 16 of the 24 sites reported trap catch counts. Numbers for ECB-E remain very low with only four locations reporting one ECB-E each. Penn Yan, Hamlin and LeRoy had ECB-Z trapped this week. Five sites reporting CEW catches this week, please see the table below for the recommended spray schedule for CEW. The first FAW were also caught this week at Baldwinsville and Kirkville, still no WBC this season.
Two different fields that had emerging tassels were scouted this week. One field had absolutely no damage in the 50 sweet corn plants scouted. This field has traps set up and has had very low numbers (<3 ECB) the entire season with no moths caught this week at all. The second field is one that did not have traps up during the first generation flight but when scouted it was well over threshold. Traps were set at this field today so that we can track future ECB flights. This great variation between two fields demonstrates the importance of scouting your own field. Even though trap catch numbers have been low for the entire season, some fields are at threshold and therefore you should not rely solely on trap catch counts. When scouting remember to focus on the emerging tassel. Separate the leaves and look down into the tassel for any signs of feeding, frass or larvae. The threshold for ECB and FAW is 15% infested plants at tassel emergence.
